This phenomenon is called “foxing” and is the result of chemical burning. It is due to high levels of acidity and is normally seen with older prints that have been attached to or come into contact with non-archival elements. An artwork fitted with a standard, non-archival mountboard and backing might look fine for the next 5 – 15 years, but eventually, moisture will react with the other acidic elements within the frame. The result, a chemical reaction occurs around and on top of the substrates which causes “burn” marks and other discoloration to appear.
