Your Guide To Paper Sizes for Printing

Share this article:

Selecting the right paper size for your printed project can be a little confusing at times. Is A4 bigger than A3? We understand that everyone uses different units of measurement and has a different level of knowledge when it comes to paper, sizing and print formats – so we are here to help guide you through it.

Knowing the basics of industry standard paper sizes can help greatly whilst configuring your projects for print and display in an aesthetically pleasing and economical way. Let’s delve into the basic “A” size system – the industry standard in South Africa and recognised globally. Before we start, we recommend you download our printable “A” Size Paper Chart to help you on your next project. We recommend printing one out for reference in your office or just taking it along with you when purchasing supplies or materials for your projects.

The most important point to take note of in “A” paper sizes, is that each step down in size, is exactly half of the larger size – very convenient. An A1 paper size is exactly half of an A0 paper size. Essentially, folding in half or doubling up on every step. This makes quick size referencing very easy. If you take an A4 paper sheet – the basic office paper size – and you fold it in half, the size is A5. Fold it in half again for A6 size, and so forth.

Since the standard A4 size paper (sometimes referred to as copy paper/office paper) is so readily available, it can be an essential tool for a visual guide to all “A” sizes. In the showroom, we often use A4 size paper to visually illustrate sizing to customers. If someone would like an A5 size reference, we simply fold an A4 sheet in half. If someone would like an A3 reference, we simply place two A4 sheets next to each other.

When economical printing is required, it is always best to start off your projects by working within the standard “A” paper size range. Because it is a local industry standard, most of the paper types are created to accommodate this sizing system and many businesses will price according to this. Taking this into account might meant the difference between being able to fit 4 x copies of your project on a printable sheet or just x 1. Correct project sizing and setup can make or break the bank.

You will note that the “A” sizes always reference a millimeter size. What about inches and centimeters?

In photographic history, the standard unit for measurement has always been inches – it still is in many parts of the world. However, in South Africa, the imperial system is used and the millimeters is the preferred reference for measurement. It is more accurate than referencing inches or centimeters and helps you to produce accurately sized projects. We recommend sticking to millimeter measurements when briefing any suppliers about materials or printing required.
